The 12th Portsmouth Translation Conference, under the banner 'Those Who Can, Teach': Translation, Interpreting and Training, signals where translator education is heading. The programme is worth a close look.

For the first time I see themes such as:
- Best practice for practical translation workshops
- Translator training and cognition
- Translators, interpreters and CPD
- Translator and interpreter training online (distance learning)
- Training the trainer
- Relevance of translation theory in and outside the classroom
- Educational theories
- Employability
- Clients need educating too
These are genuinely twenty-first-century topics and the innovative trends to watch. Several of them fall squarely within my ongoing research as a PhD candidate.
